Denver Bacon & Beer Festival Recap

16 Dec

Last Sunday, Forkly, along with Eat Boston and Denver Off the Wagon, hosted Denver’s inaugural Bacon & Beer Festival!

We over bacon-ed, over beer-ed and were in a food coma for much of Sunday.

photo (33)The festival was held at Mile High Station, which made for the perfect venue. The great space allowed for over 875 bacon and beer enthusiasts to take shelter from the cold day and warm up with creative and insanely-delicious bacon dishes and beer!

Some great surprises during the day too– like the best dressed attendees, who came all decked out!

The dishes, beer, restaurants and breweries were amazing and the crowd was spectacular! Thank you to all who attended and in particular to the hard working restaurants and brewers–many of whom gave up their day off to be there with us all.

Enjoy some fun food, brewer, and chef reviews from Eater Denver and Westword’s Cafe Society…as well as some fun Westword photos, too. Take a peek below at some of the tastes posted by Forkly friends– and Cheers to more Forkly feasts & fests in 2013!

Featured: Washington DC Chef-preneur & Micro-Greens Founder Allison Sosna

17 Aug

CHEF-PRENEUR & MICRO-GREENS FOUNDER ALLISON SOSNA (Forkly: @chefallisosna)

“Using it as a Chef, Forkly is a great tool for market research: to see what people want and where they’re getting it!”

As many of you know, Forkly recently hosted a DC happy hour at Hank’s Oyster Bar with Chef Alli Sosna. We wanted to meet some of our wonderful DC users, connect with fabulous local food bloggers & new friends, and most importantly, help raise awareness for Chef Alli’s most recent project, Micro-Greens: a program to teach kids (and their families!) to cook great, healthy food on a SNAP (food stamp) budget.

You can follow her culinary adventures on Forkly and learn more about her fantastic projects below, but before you do anything…there’s only 10 days left to donate… so take a look and help her launch Micro-Greens! The money donated will help buy aprons, support food costs and menu planning costs, pay salary for two part-time workers in the program, purchase basic equipment needs (bowls, spoons, spatulas, knives, cutting boards), and more!

More about Chef Alli:

Chef Allison Sosna is bringing healthy eating to the forefront thanks to her continuing love affair with cooking. Born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in the farmlands of New Jersey, Chef Sosna eventually landed in Washington D.C. at American University. It was then, during her years as a rower, that she realized how important food was to the body and that it impacted not only how you felt, but how you performed.

This led Sosna to Italy to learn more about food and eventually to culinary school. She spent time working at Barton Seaver, The Inn at Little Washington, a Relais & Chateau property, and Dean & Deluca where she prepared meals for retail operations and large-scale catering projects.

Fast forward a few years – Sosna became a part of the culinary team at DC Central Kitchen, as an Executive Chef to aid in overseeing school food and catering services. This may have been the tipping point in Sosna’s career as from it, she created PINE Benefit Corporation.

Pine’s mission is to break the mold and do something different by creating positive change in the community using food-service related ventures. Most recently Pine launched “Cooking with Alli,” an online radio show (Tune in on Sundays, 6-7pm EST) on how to buy, eat, and cook healthy and see how others are doing so in the community. A percentage of Pine’s profits will go to launching Micro-Greens as well.

Along the way, Chef Alli has worked and talked with leaders from First Lady Michelle Obama to Chefs Alice Waters and Jamie Oliver about the state of food in America; competed on Food Network’s Thanksgiving episode of CHOPPED (2011); and received local awards and scholarships to move forward with her work to help promote healthy eating in American homes and schools.

To meet her in person, stop by the DC Green Festival on Sept 30, where Chef Alli will be speaking at 2pm, “Snap into the SNAP Program: Healthy Cooking on a Budget.” You can also learn more about Chef Alli’s endeavors on Twitter at @ChefAlliSosna and @MicroGreensDC–in the meantime, have a look of some of her delicious tastes below and follow her on Forkly…we know we’ll be watching closely as Micro-Greens, Cooking with Alli, and Pine take off!

Forkly For a Cause: Kempe Foundation’s Salt on the Rim

20 Jul

The Kempe Center is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and attendance will help ensure healing and hope for abused and neglected children for another 40 years!

Every summer, Denver’s Kempe Foundation Alliance hosts a huge bash to raise money for The Kempe Foundation and Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect. This year, “Salt on the Rim” (if you’re a margarita lover, this one’s for you!) will be at the beautiful Denver Botanic Gardens on Friday, July 27 at 5:30pm. More info below and RSVP here.

And much to our delight, the Alliance’s co-chairs, Paul Heitzenrater & John Farnam, as well as the participating restaurants are avid Forkly users & frequented venues. Confirmed restaurants thus far: Piatti, Japoix, Chinooks Tavern, Brio Tuscan Grille, Mezcal, Sam’s #3, The Edge at Four Seasons Hotel, Lifestyles Catering, The Palm, Zink, Trinity Fine Wines, Lime, The Sheraton Downtown, The Food Guy, and Twisted Pine Brewing Co.

Individual tickets are $100 or $75 for young professionals, 39 or younger…and they are still available. We hope you’ll all attend this wonderful event and spread the word–and be sure to Forkly the best Margaritas from the Margarita Challenge and some of the best dishes of the night too!

Enjoy the festivities and Forkly for a cause!

Forkly for a Cause: Denver Health Foundation’s Hot Rocks Griller Challenge

7 Jun

Next week, if you’re in the Denver area there’s a real treat in store from the Denver Health Foundation. On Wednesday June 13, from 6pm-9pm at Elway’s Cherry Creek, the foundation is hosting their 4th annual Hot Rocks Griller Challenge fundraiser for men’s health.

This ultimate man party is about 15 of Denver’s top chefs grilling real food in a heated competition, plus a dessert chef to complement the menu. Guests will savor juicy sliders and hearty side dishes expertly paired with wine, enjoy live music by Chris Daniels and the Kings, a High Striker carnival game competition, and a silent auction. And the best part? It’s all to help raise awareness and funds for Denver Health Foundation’s men’s health programs. Tickets start at $100 per person and must be purchased in advance online at DenverHealthFoundation.org.

The field of competitors represents some of Denver’s best culinary talent and their impressive restaurants. Chefs include Steve Ballas of Steve’s Snappin’ Dogs, Robert Bogart of Elway’s Downtown, Michael Bortz (Dessert Chef) of City Bakery, Jamey Fader of Lola & Big Red F Restaurant Group, Troy Guard of TAG, TAG Raw Bar & Madison Grill, Jennifer Jasinski of Rioja, Bistro Vendôme & Euclid Hall, Simon Purvis of EDGE Restaurant, Paul Reilly, Matt Selby & Brandon Biederman of Vesta Dipping Grill & Steuben’s, Goose Sorensen of Solera, Darrel Truett of Barolo Grill, Tyler Wiard & Aniedra Nichols of Elway’s Cherry Creek, Elise Wiggins of Panzano, Sean Yontz of El Diablo. Guests may purchase poker chips to use for casting votes for their favorite sliders and sides. Chips (votes) range from $5 to $100 and raise additional funds for Denver Health Foundation.

The top 10 health threats to men are mostly preventable. One reason is because men are less likely to see the doctor — 40.7 percent (men) versus 59.3 percent (women) – until those small, preventable issues become big problems. Men age 24-44 account for a mere 7.4 percent of current visits and these are mostly for weekend warrior type orthopedic injuries. Regular physical exams, plus serious attention paid to exercise, eating habits, smoking cessation and other prevention strategies can help reverse these barriers that can lead to premature death. Funds raised through Hot Rocks will raise awareness of men’s health issues and support programs to prevent unnecessary and premature death.

And what’s a fundraiser without Forkly users spreading the word & sharing the love?! If you’re able to attend the event, RSVP as soon as possible. When at the event, include the hashtag #MensHealth and/or the handle @DenverHealthMed in your Forkly posts. Two of Forkly’s team members Martin May and Conor Swanson will be there, so be sure to check out their posts!

Jamie Oliver Foundation’s Food Revolution Day, Saturday May 19, 2012

18 May

Somewhere along the line, our relationship with food broke down - Jamie Oliver

What is Food Revolution Day?! The Jamie Oliver Foundation explains:

The Jamie Oliver Food Foundation launches its first-ever Food Revolution Day this Saturday, May 19 to inspire, educate, and empower people everywhere to stand up for real food. The weekend of events will bring together an international community of foodies, chefs, parents, educators, companies, activists, and celebrities to arm people with the knowledge and tools to make healthier food choices.

Food Revolution Day will inspire people around the world to make small, simple changes that will lead to healthier lives. Recent reports by the Institute of Medicine and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reveal that two-thirds of U.S. adults and almost a third of children are either overweight or obese. It is predicted that by 2030, 42% of adult Americans will be obese.

You can visit foodrevolutionday.com to find and create local food events, sign up to host a dinner party, and request to bring food education to your school or workplace. More than 140 cities nationwide from New York and Chicago to Kennesaw, GA, are taking action.

Below are just a few social dinner events that we’ve found for you to participate in this Saturday but keep in mind that there are hundreds of events across the globe, so you can always find one near you.

Not able to attend? No problem! There will also be Google+ Hangouts On Air, so you can catch Jamie Oliver’s dinner party with some lucky fans and supporters in a live, multi-person video conversation. Tune into the broadcast at 8:00 P.M. EDT from Food Revolution’s Google+ page. It will also be shown live on the homepage of foodrevolutionday.com AND youtube.com/foodrevolution.

Spread the word and happy, healthy eating!

Forkly for a Cause: Project Angel Heart hosts Dining Out for Life

24 Apr

This Thursday, April 26th, Project Angel Heart will make dining out more than just about enjoying good food–and as a Forkly user, you can help donate and raise awareness.
Project Angel Heart

Dining Out for Life® is an internationally licensed event hosted in 60 markets. Since 1990, the event has offered a meaningful way to support a worthy cause. On a single day, more than 250,000 people across North America are expected to help raise nearly $4 Million in the struggle against HIV/AIDS. This is Project Angel Heart’s 18th year hosting the event, the largest of its kind, with more participating restaurants and more funds raised than any other market.

Participating restaurants will donate 25% of their food sales to Project Angel Heart on Dining Out for Life® day. Diners will also have the option to make an additional donation and be entered into a drawing to win their choice of one of three fabulous prizes, each valued at $1,000.

Last year, the support from Denver-area diners alone helped Project Angel Heart raise $330,000 that went into preparing 427,675 nutritious meals for 1,863 people in the Metro area and Colorado Springs. For about 10+ years, more than 25 local restaurants (The Cherry Cricket, Café Berlin, JAX Fish House Denver, Potager, Racines, and Taste of Thailand, to name a few) have participated during Dining Out for Life, and now that number has increased to more than 300 — with 52 of them being added this year.

Now, how can sharing your locally crafted meals and drinks on Forkly help foster awareness? Easy!

  1. Go to one of the many participating restaurants near you (find your city here).
  2. Get those fingers flexing and reserve your table with OpenTable through our app (they’ll be flying like hotcakes).
  3. Post your Dining Out for Life dishes and drinks on Forkly!
  4. Include the hashtag #DOFLDEN (if you’re in Colorado) or just #DOFL (for international use) in your taste and post it to Twitter — you’ll be able to customize your tweet before it’s posted.

Don’t have a Twitter account? No worries, you can still help the cause by going to Project Angel Heart’s Facebook page and sharing it with your friends!

“Dining Out For Life is a win-win-win situation,” said spokesperson Ted Allen, host of the Food Network show Chopped. “For the price of a meal, you can help in the fight against AIDS by supporting a local HIV/AIDS organization, try a new local restaurant and feel great while enjoying a meal with friends!”

We couldn’t agree more — happy dining!
