Introducing Your Forkly Feed on the Web

19 Mar

Today we’re very excited to announce the addition of your Forkly feed to our web experience.  To date we’ve mainly been focused on building a useful iPhone app that allows you to share and discover dishes while out and about.  Although the mobile app is the heart of Forkly, earlier this year we released new venue, profile and food pages.  Starting today you can now browse your Forkly feed on the web as well.

How to browse your Forkly feed on the web:
1) Go to Forkly.com
2) Login and click the Feed navigation item at the top right of the page.
3) Thats it! Start browsing your feed.

Pro tip: We’ve added keyboard shortcuts :  ← previous taste,  next taste →, W to want

forkly_feed

You’ll notice your feed on the web is very similar to the feed on your iPhone. You can quickly look through the latest tastes from friends and see what they loved.  Double click items to want them, or click through to see the taste detail page where you can comment and find out more about a given dish.

The new Forkly feed (and the entire Forkly website) has been built responsively to work on an assortment of devices. Browse the feed on your tablet, or simply reduce your browser window to resemble your mobile feed.

We’re excited to bring the Feed feature to you today, and over the next few months look for additions to the web experience.  As always we look forward to hearing your feedback, and thank you for being a part of our great food centric community.

App Update, Forkly 2.4: New Ability to “Love” your Favorite Places

10 Dec

Forkly 2.4 takes you beyond the dishes: share your excitement and praise for a venue with the new ability to Love favorite places and to tell friends why. More details on this below.

We’ve also added Verified Tastes (more info here), to confirm that tastes match where they were posted (to catch those pesky cheaters!). Plus, those of you who’ve had trouble with your Facebook login recently will be excited to hear that the issue has been fixed. Happy posting!

Here’s the official list of updates:

✓ Ability to “Love” a Place
✓ Verified Tastes
✓ Shiny new interface on the Rate Tab
✓ Addressed a Facebook login issue
✓ Bug fixes & speed enhancements

More details below…

Loved places appear on your profile and are sorted by their proximity to you. So, your local favorites will show up but your vacation and work travel eats will too, making your recommendations visible from one city, state, and country to the next.

A place will automatically appear in your “Loved Places” list if you loved more than five dishes at a location–you can edit this list at any time by tapping on the venue page and tapping “Love this place” or tapping it to remove it.

Finally, you can tell Forkly friends why you love a place. Best margarita in town? Love the fries? Great atmosphere? We’re all interested to learn your favorites and why…so share often!

Forkly 2.4 can be downloaded for free from Apple’s app store (or just updated on your phone). Enjoy!

Battle of the Tastemakers: New Twist in Points & Influence

29 Nov

It’s been about a year since we first introduced influence points in Forkly, and in February we started awarding the title of Tastemaker to the most influential user at a place.

Since then, we’ve been watching how people use and interact with those features; there have been millions of accumulated influence points, fierce battles over Tastemakerships, and yes, even some cheating. Based on our learning, we’re announcing several important changes today on to how points and Tastemakerships will work going forward.

Fairer Tastemaker Battles

The idea behind the Tastemaker status at places has always been to give some special recognition to the users who are the most influential for a given place. It’s not about how many tastes they post there, but rather how many other people they influence to get interested in a place, and hopefully entice them to go and eat there.

In order to do this, we used to give the title of Tastemaker to the person who had the most points at a place. However, we found that this heavily favored early adopters who had simply been using Forkly longer, and made it very difficult for newer users to catch up. Don’t get us wrong: we love our early adopters! But is it fair that somebody who might have been very influential about a restaurant a year ago trumps somebody who has been a more enthusiastic advocate for the restaurant recently?

In order to make Tastemakerships more competitive, we’re now only taking into account the influence points you’ve earned at a place over the last 3 months.

Don’t worry, you’re not losing your influence points, but if you haven’t posted things from a given place lately, you might lose your Tastemaker status (time for another visit?). But, you now also have a much better shot at ousting the Tastemakers who have been resting on their laurels for too long. ;)

Verified Tastes

In the fight over Tastemakerships and influence, some people have been trying to game the system by posting tastes for things that they didn’t actually have (yes, we know, it’s inconceivable!).

Whenever you start a new taste, add a photo and post it, Forkly is now checking how far away you are from the restaurant to see if we can “verify” the taste.

We won’t prevent you from posting unverified tastes, but going forward there’s a chance that you might not earn points for it. We’ll usually give you the benefit of the doubt, but if we consistently see unverified tastes from a user, we’ll be more strict when it comes to awarding points.

Oh, and our verification system is smart enough to work with tastes that are posted later when you’ve already left the restaurant, and photos that you took using a third-party camera application. And don’t worry, all the processing happens on your phone, so we’re not sending any sensitive location data over the Netz :)

More to Come

We hope that the changes that we introduced will improve your Forkly experience, and as always, we’d love your feedback! We’ve got some other exciting changes and improvements in the works, and can’t wait to share them with you soon.

App Update, Forkly 2.3: Facebook Timeline & Low-light Mode for iPhone 5

31 Oct

The newest version of Forkly is now available to download! Forkly 2.3 includes a series of updates to help you share more of your posts with family and friends and to assist you with taking the best food photos possible in darker establishments.

✓ Great photos in Low-light. On the iPhone 5 we now support the same low-light mode as the native Camera app
✓ Easier to share! We’ve added Facebook Timeline
✓ Newly added intro screens
✓ Bug fixes and performance improvements

Below are some of the details…

New Introduction Screen

As the Forkly app develops, we want you to be able to use it to the fullest! The new intro screens let you know how to do just this–and still leaves some playing around up to you, too. Plus, when you tell your friends to download Forkly, they get a quick tutorial on how to rate, want, and discover new dishes (as opposed to asking you, who’s in the middle of savoring a delicious donut!).

Facebook Timeline

Once you add Forkly to your Facebook timeline, your Forkly posts will be visible to your Facebook friends. This makes it easier to share all your food adventures–that is, if you were going to recommend a dish or drink to friends or family members, it’s already done! You can always control your Facebook sharing in Settings on Forkly.

Low-Light Mode

For those with the iPhone 5, we now support the same low-light mode as the native Camera app. This means that when you’re in a darker restaurant or bar, you’ll notice a significant difference in your Forkly food and drink shots. Take a look at the test we did when the new iPhone 5 came out. Impressive, right!?

Forkly 2.3 can be downloaded for free from Apple’s app store (or just updated on your phone). As always, feel free to contact us with questions and feedback. Enjoy!
