Hot Dawg! Fun July 4th Celebrations and Red, White & Blue Forkly Foods

2 Jul

If the blistering heat and the fact that (in Colorado) you aren’t allowed all the sparklers, crackle fests, and spinning wonders your heart desires is leaving you bummed this Fourth of July, don’t be too disappointed, we have you covered with all the food, drinks, and events around town that will fill that empty hole.

Whole Foods in Denver will still host their July 3rd Extravaganza this Tuesday, despite the lack of fireworks, at the Glendale location (870 South Colorado Boulevard). Festivities include food, drinks, live music, and activities for the kids. This year, Whole Foods is also adding a Colorado Craft Beer tasting for $12 per person. The feast starts at 5pm and ends at 9:30pm (beer tasting begins at 7pm).

Celebrate Independence Day at West End Tavern (926 Pearl St. Boulder, CO 80302) with an array of patriotic themed food and drink specials including an American Dream Whiskey Flight, Pop Rocks Cocktail, Jul-IPA, BBQ Slaw Dog, and more!

Alchemy Restaurant along with Hamilton’s Tavern, Green Flash Brewing Co & Viva Pops will be hosting their fourth annual July 4th BBQ Bash in San Diego, CA. Alchemy’s Executive Chef Ricardo Heredia will be serving all-American inspired dishes all day. From $12 a plate to $3-$5 for specialty cocktails and beer. Dishes on the menu include Texas style BBQ brisket, all-American pig roast, smoked tofu, corn on the cob, and potato salad.

Sink your teeth into some sizzling, crispy, homemade fried chicken at Watershed on Peachtree’s (1820 Peachtree Road NW Atlanta, GA) Chicken Fried Fourth of July. The menu features chicken fried steak sandwiches, firecracker green beans, and of course homemade biscuits to name a few.

Fourth of July just isn’t Fourth of July without a hot dog eating contest. Never fear, Nathan’s Famous Frankfurters offers just the thing at their flagship location on Coney Island. On July 4th, this tradition, started back in 1916, will have you doubled over in disbelief or massive hot-dog hangover.

And just for fun, enjoy these red, white, and blue tastes from our Forkly users. Have a happy, safe 4th from the Forkly crew!

CHEF JENNA JOHANSEN (Forkly: @jennajohansen)

We’ve loved seeing Chef Jenna Johansen’s tastes on Forkly over the past few months. And with good reason! Her range of dishes offer a little something for everyone. Read on to learn more…

I use forkly to catch up on food porn, to see where and what I want to eat next, and to share some of the great dishes I’m eating with people who love delicious food as much as I do.

Chef Johansen’s love of travel has taken her all over the world, leading her to Italy and Spain and back to her homebase, Denver, Colorado. Her worldly dishes have garnered recent acclaim during the first season of Bravo’s Around the World in 80 Plates, which took the adventurous chef on a culinary tour of the world in which she competed against 12 other chefs for a $150,000 grand prize. Jenna is currently a member of the chef-driven culinary group FIVE™ and is working on her own brand of boutique food products.

Chef Johansen began her culinary career in a bakery at the age of 14. Since that first job, she has learned every element of a restaurant, from high volume corporate chef positions and waiting tables to becoming the executive chef of several independent restaurants. She has carefully planned her career around education rather than notable names, gravitating towards restaurants that gave her the opportunity to learn. Jenna’s cuisine is simple, seasonal, and surprising.

I return every day to the kitchen in the hopes that I’ll make people happy with my food. When a guest stops by to tell me they’ve just had an “a-ha” moment because of my brussels sprouts, that, to me, is an accomplishment.

Catch Chef Johansen on Bravo’s Around the World in 80 Plates on Wednesday nights from May through July. To get a taste of her cooking, meet her in person:

June 11: FIVE @ Five at the Village Cork
June 15: Aspen Food & Wine
July 16: FIVE @ Five at Two Bear Farms with Jenna Johansen

In the meantime, enjoy some of her Forkly tastes below. You can follow her on Forkly at @jennajohansen (and on Twitter with the same handle).
